ThestoryissetagainstthebackgroundofApartheidSouthAfrica.SouthAfricawascolonizedbytheBritishandDutchinthe17thcentury.BritishdominationoftheDutchdescendantsresultedintheDutchestablishingthenewcoloniesofOrangeFreeStateandTransvaal.Theidcoveryofdiamondsintheselandsaround1900ledtoaBritishinvasionwhichresultedintheBoerWar.FollowingindependencefromBritain,therewasaperildofuneasypower-sharingbetweenthetwogroupsuntilthe1940s,whentheAfrikanerNationalPartywasabletogainastrongmajority.Towardtheendofthe1980s,amidincreasingracialtensionandcriticismfromtheoutsideworld,NationalistpresidentF.W.DeKlerkstartedaseriousreform.
