[F]ThatleavesAmericanretailersprettymuchalonetheworldoverinrelyingonmagstripetechnologytochargepurchases--andleavesconsumersvulnerable.Eachmagstripehasthreetracksofinformation,explainspaymentssecurityexpertJeremyGumbley,thechieftechnologyofficerofCreditCall,anelectronic—paymentscompany.Thefirstandthirdareusedbythebankorcardissuer.Yourvitalaccountinformationlivesonthesecondtrack,whichhackerstrytocapture.“Malwareisscanningthroughthememoryinrealtimeandlookingfordata,”hesays.“Itcreatesatextfilethatgetsstolen.”

noonewantstospendthemoneyonupgradedpoint-of-salesystemsthatcanreadthechipcardsifshoppersaren’tcarryingthem—yetthere’slittlepointinconsumers’carryingthefancyplasticifstoresaren’tequippedtousethem.(AnearliereffortbyTargettomovetochipandPINnevergainedprogress.)AccordingtoGumbley,there’sa“you-firstmentality.Thelogjam(僵局)hastobebroken.”
