Thepoemconsistsoffourstanzas.Inthefirststanza,thespeakerdescribeshisposition.Hehasbeenoutwalkinginthewoodsandcomestotworoads,andhestandslookingasfardowneachoneashecansee.Hewouldliketotryoutboth,butdoubtshecoulddothat,sothereforehecontinuestolookdowntheroadsforalongtimetryingtomakehisdecisionaboutwhichroadtotake.

"Thedesiretotraveldownbothpathsisexpressedandisnotunusual,but"knowinghowwayleadsontoway",thespeakerofthispoemrealizesthatthedecisionisnotjustatemporaryoneandhe"doubtedifIshouldevercomeback."Thisishiscommonsensespeakingandacknowledgingthatwhathechoosesnowwillaffecteveryotherchoicehemakesafterward.Onceyouhaveperformedanactorspokenawordthatcrystallizeswhoyouare,thereisnoturningbackanditcannotbeundone.Onceagainattheendofthepoemtheregrethangsoverthetravelerlikeaheavycloudabouttoburst.Herealizesthatattheendofhislife,"somewhereagesandageshence",hewillhaveregretsabouthavingnevergonebackandtravelingdowntheroadshedidnottake.Yetheremainsproudofhisdecisionandherecognizesthatitwasthispaththathechosethatmadehimturnoutthewayandhedidandlivehislifethewayinwhichhelived."Itooktheroadlesstraveledbyandthathadmadeallthedifference."Tothisman,whatwasmostimportant,whatreallymadethedifference,isthathedidwhathewanted,evenifitmeanttakingtheroadlesstraveled.Ifhehadn't,hewouldn'tbethesamemanheisnow.TherearemanyequallyvalidmeaningstothispoemandRobertFrostmayhaveintendedthis.Hemayhavebeentryingtoachieveauniversalunderstanding.Inotherwords,thereisnojudgment,nospecificity,nomoral.Thereissimplyanarratorwhomakesadecisioninhislifethathadchangedthedirectionofhislifefromwhatitmayhaveotherwisebeen.Itallowsallreadersfromalldifferentexperiencestorelatetothepoem.
