Abstract
LostHorizonoffamousBritishnovelistJamesHiltonshowstheworldabeautifulandmiraculousplace—Shangri-La.MoreandmorepeoplecometofamiliarwiththewordShangri-Lawhichsymbolizestheidealutopia,afterthepublicationofLostHorizon,theidealutopiaattractmanywestpeopleeventheworldpeople’sattention.Besides,italsoleadsatrendoffindingShangri-La.Ofcourse,thisnovelisalsoattractingtheinterestingofliteraturecomments.ThispaperisananalysisofthecreatedbackgroundofthisnovelandtheoriginofthewordShangri-Lafromthefollowthreeaspects:
thesocialbackgroundofthattime;theanticipationofpeopleforpeace;andtheChineseimageintheeyesofthewestpeople.

摘要
英国著名小说家詹姆斯希尔顿的小说《消失的地平线》向世人展示了一个美丽而又神奇的地方——香格里拉。
小说出版后,越来越多的人开始熟知香格里拉那个理想的乌托邦,这个小说中的桃花源引起了西方甚至是世界的关注。
小说也引发了一股寻找香格里拉的热潮。
同时,它也正吸引着许多文学评论家的兴趣。
本文从作者所处的时代背景,当时人们对和平的渴望,以及当时西方人眼中的中国形象三方面着手分析小说的创作背景及香格里拉的起源。

1.Introduction
1.1IntroductiontoJamesHilton
JamesHiltonwasbornonSeptember9th1900inLeigh,Lancashire. Hisfather,John,wasaschoolmasterandmovedthefamilytoLondonwhereJamesattendedvariousschoolsbeforeattendingTheLeysSchool,Cambridge. Heeditedandcontributedtotheschoolmagazineandlater,whileaseventeenyearoldundergraduateatChrist'sCollege,Cambridge,oneofhisarticleswasacceptedbytheManchesterGuardian. Stillanundergraduate,hisfirstnovel,CatherineHerselfwaspublishedin1920.
Heleftuniversityin1921andsecuredajobwiththeDublinnewspaper.TheIrishIndependentwhichgavehimsufficientfinancialindependencetoproduceseveralmorenovelsduringthetwenties. In1931,heenjoyedsomesuccesswithAndNowGoodbyeandwasabletotakeupwritingfictionfulltime. Then,in1933,hewrotehismythicalparadiseofShangri-Laandbecameahouseholdword. ThebookwasawardedtheHawthorndenPrizein1934.
Onemoreeventin1933wouldensurethatHiltonhadfinallyarrived. Hewasaskedtowritea3,000wordshortstoryforthemagazineTheBritishWeekly. Afteraweekwithoutinspirationhewentoutcycling"inabluefunk"onafoggywintermorninginEppingForestuntil"suddenlyanideabobbedupandsawthewholestoryinaflash". Infourdayshehad"bangedout"astoryaboutanelderly,much-lovedschoolmasterwhichheentitledGoodbye,MrChips.
ItwasanimmediatesuccessbothinBritainandAmericaandbyearly1934Hiltonwasabest-sellingauthor. Therewasaninsatiableappetitetoreadhisworkandhisearliernovelswereallreissued.
Inthefollowingyear,1935,HiltonmarriedhisEnglishwife,AliceBrown,andHollywoodcalled. Heleftforthefilmcapitalwhere,atfirst,hefoundtheglitterof"Tinseltown"tobecongenial. Manyofhisbooksbecameworld-widehitmovies,mostnotably,LostHorizon(1937),Goodbye,MrChips(1939)andRandomHarvest(1942).
Hiltonbecameestablishedasasought-afterHollywoodscriptwriterandnotablycontributedtotheGreerGarsonwartimeclassicMrsMiniver. HewasapopularfigureinHollywoodandcountedFrankCapra,RonaldColmanandGreerGarsonamongsthisfriends.
Sadly,hisfirstmarriageendedindivorcein1937andonlysevendayslaterhemarriedGalinaKopineck,ayoungstarlet. ThismarriageprovedvolatileandHiltonagaindivorcedeightyearslater.Hecontinuedtowritebest-sellingnovelsbefore,duringandaftertheSecondWorldWarincludingRandomHarvest,SoWellRememberedandTimeandTimeAgain.OnDecember20th1954HiltondiedinhospitalinLongBeach,Californiaoflivercancer. Bythistimehisfirstwife,Alice,hadbeenreconciledwithhimandnursedhimtilltheend.

LostHorizonisanovelwrittenbyEnglishwriterJamesHiltonin1933.Inthisbook,HiltonimaginedaspecialplacehighinthemountainsofTibet.Itwasautopianplacewherepeoplecouldlivetobehundredsofyearsold.ThisperfectplacewascalledShangri-La.
HughConwayisamemberoftheBritishdiplomaticservice.Hefindsinnerpeace,love,andasenseofpurposeinShangri-La.Peoplethereliveaverylongtime.Onethemeofthebookisthepossibilityofanotherworldwarandwarpreparations.Thiswasactuallyhappeningatthattime.ThestoryissimilartotravelstoriesintheTibetanborderlandsbyJosephRockintheNationalGeographicmagazine.Theremotecommunitieshevisited,suchasMuliaresimilartoHilton'sfictionalShangri-La.TheMulitownofZhongdianhasitsnametoShangriLa(Chinese:
Xianggelila).
Thebookdescribeshowwaronthegroundwouldmoveintotheair.Lifeandallspecialthingscouldbelost,evenhistory.MaybeShangri-lawouldprotecttheseimportantthingsforlaterwhentheworldwastiredofwar.Thatwastherealpurposeoftheplace.

Theoriginoftheelevennumberedchaptersofthenovelisexplainedintwoopeningandclosingsections.Thenarratorisaneurologist.
ThisneurologistfriendnamedRutherfordwereeatingdinneratTempelhof,Berlinwiththeiroldschool-friendWyland.ThetopicofHughConwaycomesupinconversation.HewasaBritishconsulinAfghanistan,whodisappearedmysteriously.RutherfordtellsthenarratorlaterthateveningthathemetConwayinaFrenchmissionhospitalinChung-Kiang,China.Conwayhadamnesia,butrecoveredhismemory.HetoldRutherfordhisstory,thendisappearedagain.

InMay,1931,duringtheBritishRajinIndia,80whiteresidentswereevacuatedtoPeshawarbecauseofarevolution.Conway,theBritishconsul,age37;Mallinson,hisyoungvice-consul;anAmerican,Barnard;andaBritishmissionary,MissBrinklowisinanairplane.TheplaneishijackedandflownoverthemountainstoTibet.Afteracrashlanding,thepilotdies.But,hetoldthefourtogethelpatthenearbylamaseryofShangri-La.Theydonotknowwheretheyare,butConwaythinksthattheypassedtheHimalayasandareneartheKunlun.
ChanglivesatShangri-LaandspeaksEnglish.Hetakesthefourtothelamasery.Ithasmodernconveniences,likecentralheating;bathtubsfromAkron,Ohio;alargelibrary;agrandpiano;aharpsichord;andfoodfromthevalleybelow.AboveisKarakal,amountainmorethan28,000feet(8,500 m)high.Karakalmean"BlueMoon".
