Now,theboysinnever-never-landwerebeginningtogetanxiousaboutPeterPan,whowastheirleader.Hewasawayforalongtime,andtheywereafraidofwolvesandpirates.Byandbytheysawsomethingthatlookedlikealargewhitebirdinthesky.Astheylookedatit,tinkerbellsuddenlyshoneonthetrees,andtoldthemthatPeterPanwantedthemtoshootthisbirdatonce.Sotheyranandgotbowsandarrows,andshotthebird.Suddenlydownitfell—whatdoyouthinkitwas?
-----poorWendyfellwithanarrowinherbreast.ButWendywasnotdead.Soonshefeltwell,andthenwithherbrothersroundher,andPeterPanholdingherhand,shepromisedalltheboystobetheirmother.ThentheybeganworkingandbuiltWendyfunnylittlehouse,withjohn’ssilk-hatforachimney;andeverybodywasvery,veryhappy.ButtinkerbellwasveryjealousofWendy.Thoughtheyweresohappyintheirhouse,therewereonthelakeneartheforestsometerriblepirates.ThecaptainoftheseterriblepirateswasnamedJameshook.Allhiscrewwereafraidofhimandtrembledwhentheysawhim.Hislongblackhairwasfearful,thewrinklesonhisfacewasfearful,hiseyeswerefearful,andhisvoicewasfearful.But,aboveall,hisrighthandwasmostfearful.Itwasn’tacommonhandatall;itwasanironhook.Peterpanhadoncedriventhisterriblepirateintothesea,andahugecrocodilehadbittenoffhishandandpartofhiswrist.Thecrocodilefollowedthecaptainwhereverhewent,andwantedtohaveanotherbite.Itdreamedofthehappydaywhenitcouldeathimallup.Thecaptainalwaysknewwhenthisfearfulenemywasnear,becauseononeoccasionithadswallowedanalarm-clock.Itwassomadethatitwouldgoforonecenturywithoutstopping.Nowthetickingofthisclockcouldplainlybeheardeventhroughitsthickskin.Ittickedsoloudlythatthecaptaincouldal-wayshearitcoming,anditwasthesignalforhimtorun!
Butthecaptainwasafraid,becauseheknewtheclockwouldstopsomeday.Thenthecrocodilewouldcomeupbehindhimandeathimup.SohegrewtohatePeterPan,andwantedtokillhim.Thehomeofthelostboyswasintheforestbythelake.Theylivedunderthegroundforfearofthepiratesandthewolves.Eachboyhadaspecialstaircasehollowedinatree-trunk;sothattheycouldeasilyrundownamongtherootsofthetreesintotheircave.Wendy,youmustknow,hadbecomethemotheroftheseboys,andtheyalllovedher,becauseitwassodelightfultohaveamotherafterhavinglivedsolongwithoutone.Wendygaveeachoftheboyssomemedicine,taughtthemhowtobehavenicely,andputthemallintheircomfortablebedsatnight.Thoughshewasonlynineyearsold,Wendywasquiteasplendidmother.ThelostboyswereprotectedbysomefriendlyIndians.Onthisday,upcamethepirates,andsuddenlytherewasastampingoverhead,andasoundofpeoplefightingandstrugglinghereandthere.ThepirateshadattackedtheredIndiansbysurprise.Thebattlewasverysoonover.TheIndianswerebeatenandranaway,orcrawledseriouslywoundedintotheforest.Thepirateswonavictorycloseabovethechildren’sheads.Now,onthisnight,beforethefighthadstarted,Wendyhadbeentellingtheboysastoryaboutherownfatherandmother-abeautifulstorywhichshowedhowherfatherandmothermustbecryingfortheirlostchildren.Asshewasfinishingherstory,JohnandMichaelsprangupintheirbedsandsaid,“Wendy,wemustgobackquickly!
”“yes,answeredWendy,“wemustgobackquickly”YoucanimaginehowsadallthemotherlessboyswerewhentheyheardthatWendywasgoinghome.Theycriedsomuchthatatlastshetoldthemtheymightreturnwithherandherbrothers.Shesaidtheycouldliveintherehouse,andhaveMr.AndMr.Darlingfortheirfatherandmother.AlltheboysexceptPeterPanwereverygladtohearthat.PeterPansaidhedidnotwanttogrowup.Hedidnotwanttoliveinarealhouseandgotoschool.HewantedtolivealwaysinNever-Never-Land.Sotheyallsaidgood-bytoPeterPan,andclimbedupthestaircasesinthetree-trunkswhichledfromtheirundergroundhometotheforest.Wendywasthelasttogo,andbeforeshewentsheleftsomemedicineforPeterandmadhimpromisethathewouldtakeitwhenhewokeupinthemorning.Butthepirateswerethereonthegroundwaitingforthemtocomeout.Theboyswerecaughtastheysteppedontheground;aroughhandwasheldovertheirmouthstopreventthemfromcryingout,andtheywerecarriedawaytothepirateshipwithWendy.

haughty,proud,arrogant,vain
这些形容词都有“骄傲的,傲慢的”之意。
haughty:
较正式用词,多用于贬义。
