TheslavescopiedEuropeanandAmericanminstrelswhovisitedtheCape.Eventually,atypicalSouthAfricansounddeveloped.Bruindersexplainsthatthebeatandharmoniesofthemusicstillreflectwhereitcamefrom.“It’sapoorcommunity.Theydon’thavenewshinyinstruments.It’snotperfect,theywerenottaught.Theywereallhandeddownfromfathertoson,”shesaid.
TodaytheminstrelsareaholidaytraditionamongCapeTown’smixed-raceor“colored”residents,manyofwhoseancestorsareslaves.Adowntownparadeinvolvesthousandsofparticipants.Dozensofminstrelgroupspracticethroughouttheyear,oneofwhichiscalledThePennsylvanians,namedafterAmericansingersfromthestateofPennsylvaniawhoinfluencedtheCapeminstreltradition.
