ReadSection4-1whichdescribestheoperationoftheunderwaterunitcircuitry.Referalsotothesectiontitled'schematics'whichcontainstheunderwaterunitschematicdiagrams.
Allvoltagesaremeasuredrelativetopin2ofanyplug-incard;thisismainsignal/powergroundfortheunderwaterunit.
5-1.1UNDERWATERUNITCOMPLETELYINOPERATIVE
Makesurethatthedeckunitissupplyingtheproperseacablevoltage(250volts).Ifthereisnosea-cablevoltage,theseacablerearpanelfusemaybeblown.
WithSEARAMunits,seethatSEARAMissupplyingthepropervoltagetotheCTD(12-15volts).
Lookforthepresenceofthetelemetrywaveformacrosstheseacable.USEEXTREMECAUTIONINPERFORMINGTHISOBSERVATION.THESEACABLEVOLTAGEISPOTENTIALLYLIFE-THREATENING!
ALLOW1MINUTEAFTERPOWER-DOWNFORPOWERSUPPLYDISCHARGEBEFOREMAKINGCONNECTIONSTOTHESEACABLEOUTPUTCONNECTOR.Ifthetelemetrywaveformispresent,thetroubleisprobablyinthedeckunit.
Ifthetelemetrywaveformisnotpresentatthedeckunit,measuretheseacablecurrentwhichwillbeintherangeof50to220milliamperesdependingontheunderwaterunitconfiguration.
Iftheseacablevoltageispresent,butnocurrentisbeingdrawnbytheunderwaterunit,thereiseitherabreakintheseacable,oranopencircuitinthecableinterfacecircuitryinsidetheunderwaterunit.
Assumingthatthereisnobreakintheseacable,turnoffthedeckunitpower,refertoSection6-1andopentheUnderwaterUnithousing,butleavetheelectronicschassisconnectedtothetopendcap.
Restoredeckunitpowerandmeasuretheinternalsupplyvoltages(relativetopin2):
+5,+15and-15atpins1,5,and3respectivelyoftheAnaloginterfaceboards.
Ifthereisnovoltageatanypointonthebackplane,theseacableinterfacecircuitryiseitherdefectiveorisnotreceivingpowerfromtheseacable.CheckthattheSea-cableInterfaceisreceivingthecorrectinputvoltage(250volts).
IfnovoltageispresentattheinputstotheDC/DCconverters,theseriespasstransistorQ1onthesea-cableinterfaceboardmaybeopen.
Ifthe+5,+8,+15,or-15voltlevelsareabsentorinerrorbymorethanabout0.5volts,removealltheunderwaterunitpluginprintedcircuitboards.Checkthepowersupplylevelsagain-ifthesearenowok,theproblemisprobablyinoneoftheplug-inboards.Startpluggingboardsin,beginningwiththeTransmitter(top)board.(Turnoffpowerandwaitoneminuteforsupplydischargebeforepluggingineachboard).Ifaboardisfoundwhichappearstocausethedropinsupplyvoltage,refertothecircuitdescriptioninSection4-1andtheboard'sschematicdiagram.
Checktheboardfordeadshortsatthepowerinputpins-anICoroneofthepowersupplybypasscapacitorsmaybeshorted.Also,carefullyexaminetheboardforanymetallicmaterial(solder,wireclippings,shavings)whichmayhaveinadvertentlyshortedtheprintedcircuittracesorcomponentpins.
Withtheboardintheunderwaterunitchassis,lookattheboardoutputsandinputsforsignalirregularities.Thelogiclevelsare5voltCMOSandshouldswingthefull0to+5volts.
Ifthepowersupplylevelsarenotokwiththeplug-inboardsremoved,checkthebackplanewiringforbrokenconnectionsorwires,andforanyshortedconnections.CheckthattheinputvoltagetotheDC/DCconvertersiscorrect.Ifso,oneoftheconvertersmaybedefective,oroneoftheby-passcapacitorsacrosstheconverteroutputsmaybeshorted.
5-1.2POWERSUPPLIESOKBUTNODATA
CheckLogicBoardpin3fortheNRZlogiclevel.Ifthissignalispresent,checkphase-reversingoutputatTransmitterBoardpin8.
Ifthephase-encodedsignalispresentattheTransmitterBoardoutput,theproblemisinthetransformercouplingtothesea-cable,orinthesea-cablewiringitself.
Ifthephase-encodedsignalismissing(orwronginfrequencyorwaveform),checkforproperoutputsignalsfromtheLogic1Board.Thefollowingshouldbeobserved:
Pin5FR27,648kHz(squarewave)
Pin4FR/46,912kHz(squarewave)
PinH69120Hz(squarewave)
Pin68640(squarewave)
IfthesignalsdescribedaboveareokontheLogicBoardalone,reinstalltheremainingcircuitboardsone-by-one,checkingthesuspectsignalaftereachcardisinstalleduntilthefaultycardislocated.
5-1.3ONEORMORENON-FUNCTIONINGCHANNELS
Ifafrequencychannelisgivingimproperreadings,checkthatthesensorsignalispresentonAPcounterboard(pins7andHonthebackplane,foundontherightedgeofthesmallboardthatthecoaxcablingismountedto).Theseare2voltp-psinewavesinthefrequencyrangeof2800-12000Hzfortemperatureandconductivityanda4voltsquarewaveintherange35000to40000Hzforthepressuresensor.
Ifoneofthesensoroutputsisfaulty,removethatchannel'sAPCounterBoard-ifthisrestoresthesignal,theAPBoardhasadefectiveinput.TryoneoftheotherAPCounters(thefiveboardsareidentical)intheoffendingchannelposition.
IftheAPCounterinputsareok,tryswappingAPCounterBoardstolocatethefaultyone.Iftheproblemstayswiththesamechannel,checkthattheFR,SE,SC,andRESET,inputsareactive.
IftheproblemisafaultyA/Dchannel,checkthattheinputstotheA/DBoardmultiplexer(pinsD,F,H,J,L,10,8,7)areasassumed.Checkfor+15and-15voltsattheA/DBoard.LookfortheSEscanclockatpin9;thisstartsthe(rapid~50μs/channel)acquisitionofA/Dchanneldata.CheckthattheSCshiftclockispresentatpin6,andthatserialdataispresentatpin4.
5-1.4PUMPNOTWORKING
CTDsshippedafter1January1990havea"hard-wired"pumpdelaytofacilitatepumppriming.Withthisfeature,thepumpturn-onisenabledonlyaftertwoconditionsaremet.First,theconductivitycellmustbefilledwithseawaterwhichcausestheconductivityfrequencytoriseabovethe0conductivityfrequency.Second,whentheCTDsensestheproperincreaseinfrequency,itstartsa60seconddelaytimer.Thisdelayallowssufficienttimefortheairinthetubingtoescapethroughtheairbleed-hole.Besuretoholdthepumpjustunderthesurfacewiththetopofthetubingunderwaterforatleastafullminutebeforebeginningtheprofile.
Note:
Thecontrollogicforthisfeatureonlyfunctionsonthe"Primary"conductivitychannel.IftheCTDisequippedwithredundantT&Csensorsandpumps,andyouwishtodeployitwiththe"Primary"conductivitysensorremoved,besuretoswapthe"Secondary"T&Csensorpairtothe"Primary"T&Cchannelbulkheadconnectors.
Note:
witholdwatersamplersystemsthatinterruptCTDpowerwhentrippingabottle,wait60secondsafterbottlefiringforthepumptorestart(itisnotnecessarytowaitwhenusingtheSea-Birdsubcarriermodem/rosetteinterfacesystem).
Makesurethatthepumpcableisnotcutorotherwisedamagedandthattherubbermoldedplugisfullymatedtothepumphousingconnector.Unplugthepumpfromitsexternalcable.Apply+12voltstothepumphousing'ssmallconnectorpin,returntothelargepin.Lookforacurrentdrainofabout300milliamperesandlistenforthepumprunning.Ifthepumppassesthistest,theproblemisinthemainhousingorinthecabling.Disassembletheunderwaterunitandperformthefollowingtests.
Unplugtheconductivitysensor.Connectaaudiosignalgenerator(approximately2voltsp-poutput)atpin7(returntopinH)oftheAPCounterBoardforprimaryconductivity(C1).Setthegeneratorfrequencytoabout2500Hz.ObservethesquaredsignalatU2Aoutput.MeasurethevoltageatpinLwhichshouldbezero.Increasethegeneratorfrequencytoabout4000Hz.ThevoltageatpinLshouldnowbe5volts.Ifnot,theone-shotU3BorthebufferU2Bisdefective.
IfthevoltageatC1APCounterBoardpinLrespondsproperly,makesurethatitalsoappearsattheTransmitterBoardpinK.60secondsafterTransmitterBoardpinKgoeshigh,pinLshouldalsogohigh(tonearly15volts).Ifthisisthecase,theproblemisinthewiringtothepumpexternalconnector.
