精英教育的劣势Thedisadvantagesofeliteeducation(中英文齐备)(转)
Itdidn’tdawnonmethattheremightbeafewholesinmyeducationuntilIwasabout35.
I’djustboughtahouse,thepipesneededfixing,andtheplumberwasstandinginmykitchen
Therehewas,ashort,beefyguywithagoateeandaRedSoxcapandathickBostonaccent,andIsuddenlylearnedthatIdidn’thavetheslightestideawhattosaytosomeonelikehim.
Soalienwashisexperiencetome,sounguessablehisvalues,somysterioushisverylanguage,thatIcouldn’tsucceedinengaginghiminafewminutesofsmalltalkbeforehegotdowntowork.
FourteenyearsofhighereducationandahandfulofIvyLeaguedegrees,andthereIwas,stiffandstupid,struckdumbbymyowndumbness.
“Ivyretardation,”afriendofminecallsthis.Icouldcarryonconversationswithpeoplefromothercountries,inotherlanguages,butIcouldn’ttalktothemanwhowasstandinginmyownhouse.
It’snotsurprisingthatittookmesolongtodiscovertheextentofmymiseducation,becausethelastthinganeliteeducationwillteachyouisitsowninadequacy.
AstwodozenyearsatYaleandColumbiahaveshownme,elitecollegesrelentlesslyencouragetheirstudentstoflatterthemselvesforbeingthere,andforwhatbeingtherecandoforthem.
Theadvantagesofaneliteeducationareindeedundeniable.Youlearntothink,atleastincertainways,andyoumakethecontactsneededtolaunchyourselfintoaliferichinallofsociety’smostcherishedrewards.
Toconsiderthatwhilesomeopportunitiesarebeingcreated,othersarebeingcancelledandthatwhilesomeabilitiesarebeingdeveloped,othersarebeingcrippledis,withinthiscontext,notonlyoutrageous,butinconceivable.
I’mnottalkingaboutcurriculaortheculturewars,theclosingoropeningoftheAmericanmind,politicalcorrectness,canonformation,orwhathaveyou.I’mtalkingaboutthewholesysteminwhichtheseskirmishesplayout.
NotjusttheIvyLeagueanditspeerinstitutions,butalsothemechanismsthatgetyouthereinthefirstplace:
theprivateandaffluentpublic“feeder”schools,theever-growingparastructureoftutorsandtest-prepcoursesandenrichmentprograms,thewholeadmissionsfrenzyandeverythingthatleadsuptoandawayfromit.
Themessage,asalways,isthemedium.Before,after,andaroundtheelitecollegeclassroom,aconstellationofvaluesisceaselesslyinculcated.
Asglobalizationsharpenseconomicinsecurity,weareincreasinglycommittingourselves—asstudents,asparents,asasociety—toavastapparatusofeducationaladvantage.
Withsomanyresourcesdevotedtothebusinessofeliteacademicsandsomanypeoplescramblingforthelimitedspaceatthetopoftheladder,itisworthaskingwhatexactlyitisyougetintheend—whatitisweallget,becausetheelitestudentsoftoday,astheirinstitutionsnevertireofremindingthem,aretheleadersoftomorrow.
Thefirstdisadvantageofaneliteeducation,asIlearnedinmykitchenthatday,isthatitmakesyouincapableoftalkingtopeoplewhoaren’tlikeyou.
Eliteschoolspridethemselvesontheirdiversity,butthatdiversityisalmostentirelyamatterofethnicityandrace.
Withrespecttoclass,theseschoolsarelargely—indeedincreasingly—homogeneous.Visitanyelitecampusinourgreatnationandyoucanthrilltotheheartwarmingspectacleofthechildrenofwhitebusinesspeopleandprofessionalsstudyingandplayingalongsidethechildrenofblack,Asian,andLatinobusinesspeopleandprofessionals.
Atthesametime,becausetheseschoolstendtocultivateliberalattitudes,theyleavetheirstudentsintheparadoxicalpositionofwantingtoadvocateonbehalfoftheworkingclasswhilebeingunabletoholdasimpleconversationwithanyoneinit.
WitnessthelasttwoDemocraticpresidentialnominees,AlGoreandJohnKerry:
oneeachfromHarvardandYale,bothearnest,decent,intelligentmen,bothutterlyincapableofcommunicatingwiththelargerelectorate.
Butitisn’tjustamatterofclass.
Myeducationtaughtmetobelievethatpeoplewhodidn’tgotoanIvyLeagueorequivalentschoolweren’tworthtalkingto,regardlessoftheirclass.
Iwasgiventheunmistakablemessagethatsuchpeoplewerebeneathme.
Wewere“thebestandthebrightest,”astheseplaceslovetosay,andeveryoneelsewas,well,somethingelse:
lessgood,lessbright.Ilearnedtogivethatlittlenodofunderstanding,thatslightlysympathetic“Oh,”whenpeopletoldmetheywenttoalessprestigiouscollege.(如果我上了哈佛,有人问我在哪上学时,我学会了说“在波士顿”)。
(IfI’dgonetoHarvard,Iwouldhavelearnedtosay“inBoston”whenIwasaskedwhereIwenttoschool)
Ineverlearnedthattherearesmartpeoplewhodon’tgotoelitecolleges,oftenpreciselyforreasonsofclass.Ineverlearnedthattherearesmartpeoplewhodon’tgotocollegeatall.
Ialsoneverlearnedthattherearesmartpeoplewhoaren’t“smart.”Theexistenceofmultipleformsofintelligencehasbecomeacommonplace,buthowevermucheliteuniversitiesliketosprinkletheirincomingclasseswithafewactorsorviolinists,theyselectforanddeveloponeformofintelligence:
theanalytic.
Onenaturallyprizeswhatonemostpossessesandwhatmostmakesforone’sadvantages.
Butsocialintelligenceandemotionalintelligenceandcreativeability,tonamejustthreeotherforms,arenotdistributedpreferentiallyamongtheeducationalelite.The“best”arethebrightestonlyinonenarrowsense.Oneneedstowanderawayfromtheeducationalelitetobegintodiscoverthis.
Whataboutpeoplewhoaren’tbrightinanysense?
IhaveafriendwhowenttoanIvyLeaguecollegeaftergraduatingfromatypicallymediocrepublichighschool.Oneofthevaluesofgoingtosuchaschool,sheoncesaid,isthatitteachesyoutorelatetostupidpeople.
Somepeoplearesmartintheelite-collegeway,somearesmartinotherways,andsomearen’tsmartatall.Itshouldbeembarrassingnottoknowhowtotalktoanyofthem,ifonlybecausetalkingtopeopleistheonlyrealwayofknowingthem.
Eliteinstitutionsaresupposedtoprovideahumanisticeducation,butthefirstprincipleofhumanismisTerence’s:
“nothinghumanisalientome.”Thefirstdisadvantageofaneliteeducationishowverymuchofthehumanitalienatesyoufrom.
