Thankyou. Thankyou,everybody. Goodevening. Youknow,Ihadanentirespeechpreparedforthiswonderfuloccasion,butnowthatI'mhereIthinkI'mgoingtotrysomethingalittledifferent. TonightIwanttospeakfromtheheart. I'mgoingtospeakoffthecuff. (Telepromptersrise.) (Laughterandapplause.)
Goodevening. (Laughter.) Pauseforlaughter. (Laughter.) Waitaminute,thismaynotbeworkingaswellasI--(laughter.) Letmetrythatagain.
Goodevening,everybody. (Applause.) Iwouldliketowelcomeyoualltothe10-dayanniversaryofmyfirst100days. (Laughter.) IamBarackObama. Mostofyoucoveredme. Allofyouvotedforme. (Laughterandapplause.) ApologiestotheFoxtable. (Laughter.) They're--wherearethey?
IhavetoconfessIreallydidnotwanttobeheretonight,butIknewIhadtocome--justonemoreproblemthatI'veinheritedfromGeorgeW.Bush. (Laughter.)
ButnowthatI'mhere,it'sgreattobehere. It'sgreattoseeallofyou. MichelleObamaishere,theFirstLadyoftheUnitedStates. (Applause.) Hasn'tshebeenanoutstandingFirstLady?
(Applause.) She'sevenbeguntobridgethedifferencesthathavedividedusforsolong,becausenomatterwhichpartyyoubelongtowecanallagreethatMichellehastherighttobarearms. (Laughterandapplause.)

Now,speaking--whenIthinkaboutchildrenobviouslyIthinkaboutMichelleanditremindsmethattomorrowisMother'sDay. HappyMother'sDaytoallthemothersintheaudience. (Applause.) Idohavetosay,though,thatthisisatoughholidayforRahmEmanuelbecausehe'snotusedtosayingtheword"day"after"mother." (Laughter.) That'strue. (Laughter.)
DavidAxelrodishere. Youknow,DavidandIhavebeentogetherforalongtime. Icanstillremember--Igottosortof--ItearupalittlebitwhenIthinkbacktothatdaythatIcalledAxsomanyyearsagoandsaid,youandIcandowonderfulthingstogether. AndhesaidtomethesamethingthatpartnersallacrossAmericaaresayingtooneanotherrightnow:

Michael,forthelasttime,theRepublicanPartydoesnotqualifyforabailout. (Laughter.) RushLimbaughdoesnotcountasatroubledasset,I'msorry. (Laughter.)
DickCheneywassupposedtobeherebutheisverybusyworkingonhismemoirs,tentativelytitled,"HowtoShootFriendsandInterrogatePeople." (Laughter.)
Youknow,it'sbeenawhirlwindofactivitythesefirsthundreddays. We'veenactedamajoreconomicrecoverypackage,wepassedabudget,weforgedanewpathinIraq,andnoPresidentinhistoryhasevernamedthreeCommerceSecretariesthisquickly. (Laughter.) Whichremindsme,ifJuddGreggishere,yourbusinesscardsarereadynow. (Laughter.)
Ontopofthat,I'vealsoreversedthebanonstemcellresearch,signedanexpansion--(applause)--signedanexpansionofthechildren'shealthinsurance. Justlastweek,CarandDrivernamedmeautoexecutiveoftheyear. (Laughter.) SomethingI'mveryproudof.
We'vealsobeguntochangethecultureinWashington. We'veevenmadetheWhiteHouseaplacewherepeoplecanlearnandcangrow. Justrecently,LarrySummersaskedifhecouldchairtheWhiteHouseCouncilonWomenandGirls. (Laughter.) AndIdoappreciatethatLarryisheretonightbecauseitissevenhourspasthisbedtime. (Laughter.) Gibbslikedthatone. (Laughter.)
Inthelasthundreddays,we'vealsogrowntheDemocraticPartybyinfusingitwithnewenergyandbringinginfresh,youngfaceslikeArlenSpecter. (Laughter.) Now,JoeBidenrightlydeservesalotofcreditforconvincingArlentomaketheswitch,butSecretaryClintonactuallyhadalottodowithittoo. Onedayshejustpulledhimasideandshesaid,Arlen,youknowwhatIalwayssay--"ifyoucan'tbeatthem,jointhem." (Laughter.)
Whichbringsmetoanotherthingthat'schangedinthisnew,warmer,fuzzierWhiteHouse,andthat'smyrelationshipwithHillary. Youknow,wehadbeenrivalsduringthecampaign,butthesedayswecouldnotbecloser. Infact,thesecondshegotbackfromMexicoshepulledintoahugandgavemeabigkiss. (Laughter.)ToldmeI'dbettergetdowntheremyself. (Laughter.) WhichIreallyappreciated. Imean,itwas--itwasnice. (Laughter.)
Andofcoursewe'vealsobeguntochangeAmerica'simageintheworld. Wetalkedaboutthisduringthiscampaignandwe'restartingtoexecute. We'verenewedallianceswithimportantpartnersandfriends. Ifyoulookonthescreenthere,thereIamwithJapanesePrimeMinisterTaroAso. ThereIamwithGordonBrown.
ButasIsaidduringthecampaign,wecan'tjusttalktoourfriends. Ashardasitis,wealsohavetotalktoourenemies,andI'vebeguntodoexactlythat. Takealookatthemonitorthere. (Laughter.) Now,letmebeclear,justbecausehehandedmeacopyofPeterPandoesnotmeanthatI'mgoingtoreadit--(laughter)--butit'sgooddiplomaticpracticetojustacceptthesegifts.
Allthischangehasn'tbeeneasy. Changeneveris. SoI'vecutthetensionbybringinganewfriendtotheWhiteHouse. He'swarm,he'scuddly,loyal,enthusiastic. Youjusthavetokeephimonatightleash. Everyonceinawhilehegoeschargingoffinthewrongdirectionandgetshimselfintotrouble. ButenoughaboutJoeBiden. (Laughter.)
Allinall,we'reproudofthechangewe'vebroughttoWashingtoninthesefirsthundreddaysbutwe'vegotalotofworklefttodo,asallofyouknow. SoI'dliketotalkalittlebitaboutwhatmyadministrationplanstoachieveinthenexthundreddays.
Duringthesecondhundreddays,wewilldesign,buildandopenalibrarydedicatedtomyfirsthundreddays. (Laughter.) It'sgoingtobebig,folks. (Laughter.) Inthenexthundreddays,IwilllearntogoofftheprompterandJoeBidenwilllearntostayontheprompter. (Laughter.)
Inthenexthundreddays,ourbipartisanoutreachwillbesosuccessfulthatevenJohnBoehnerwillconsiderbecomingaDemocrat. Afterall,wehavealotincommon. Heisapersonofcolor. (Laughter.) Althoughnotacolorthatappearsinthenaturalworld. (Laughter.) What'sup,John?

Inthenexthundreddays,Iwillmeetwithaleaderwhorulesovermillionswithanironfist,whoownstheairwavesanduseshispowertocrushallwhowouldchallengehisauthorityattheballotbox. It'sgoodtoseeyou,MayorBloomberg. (Laughter.)
Inthenexthundreddays,wewillhousetrainourdog,Bo,becausethelastthingTimGeithnerneedsissomeoneelsetreatinghimlikeafirehydrant. (Laughter.) Inthenexthundreddays,Iwillstronglyconsiderlosingmycool. (Laughter.)
Finally,IbelievethatmynexthundreddayswillbesosuccessfulIwillbeabletocompletethemin72days. (Laughter.) Andonthe73rdday,Iwillrest. (Laughter.)
Ijust--Iwanttoendbysayingafewwordsaboutthemenandwomeninthisroomwhosejobitistoinformthepublicandpursuethetruth. Youknow,wemeettonightatamomentofextraordinarychallengeforthisnationandfortheworld,butit'salsoatimeofrealhardshipforthefieldofjournalism. Andlikesomanyotherbusinessesinthisglobalage,you'veseensweepingchangesandtechnologyandcommunicationsthatleadtoasenseofuncertaintyandanxietyaboutwhatthefuturewillhold.
Acrossthecountry,thereareextraordinary,hardworkingjournalistswhohavelosttheirjobsinrecentdays,recentweeks,recentmonths. AndIknowthateachnewspaperandmediaoutletiswrestlingwithhowtorespondtothesechanges,andsomearestrugglingsimplytostayopen. Anditwon'tbeeasy. Noteveryendingwillbeahappyone.
Butit'salsotruethatyourultimatesuccessasanindustryisessentialtothesuccessofourdemocracy. It'swhatmakesthisthingwork. Youknow,ThomasJeffersononcesaidthatifhehadthechoicebetweenagovernmentwithoutnewspapers,ornewspaperswithoutagovernment,hewouldnothesitatetochoosethelatter.
Clearly,ThomasJeffersonneverhadcablenewstocontendwith--(laughter)--buthiscentralpointremains:
Agovernmentwithoutnewspapers,agovernmentwithoutatoughandvibrantmediaofallsorts,isnotanoptionfortheUnitedStatesofAmerica. (Applause.)
SoImaynot--Imaynotagreewitheverythingyouwriteorreport. Imayevencomplain,ormorelikelyGibbswillcomplain, fromtimetotimeabouthowyoudoyourjobs,butIdosowiththeknowledgethatwhenyouareatyourbest,thenyouhelpmebeatmybest. YouhelpallofuswhoserveatthepleasureoftheAmericanpeopledoourjobsbetterbyholdingusaccountable,bydemandinghonesty,bypreventingusfromtakingshortcutsandfallingintoeasypoliticalgamesthatpeoplearesodesperatelywearyof.
Andthatkindofreportingisworthpreserving--notjustforyoursake,butforthepublic's. Wecountonyoutohelpusmakesenseofacomplexworldandtellthestoriesofourlivesthewaytheyhappen,andwelookforyoufortruth,evenifit'salwaysanapproximation,evenif--(laughter.)
Thisisaseasonofrenewalandreinvention. Thatiswhatgovernmentmustlearntodo,that'swhatbusinessesmustlearntodo,andthat'swhatjo
