Whatismarketing?
TheCharteredInstituteofMarketingdefinesitasthe“managementprocessofanticipating,identifyingandsatisfyingcustomerrequirementsprofitably.”Thisdefinitiondescribesmodernmarketing,becauseonlyrecentlyhavetheneedsandwantsoftheconsumerplayedapartininfluencingmarketingstrategy.Ithasonlybeeninthatlasthalf-decadeorso,infact,thatcompanieshavebasedtheirproductdevelopmentonmarketresearch.Beforemarketresearchwasdeveloped,companiesproducedwhatevergoodstheyfeltweremostuseful,butleftituptosalespeopletofindthebestwaystosellthosegoodstocustomers.
Twotermswewillbeusingfrequentlyinourdiscussionsoverthecomingweeksareacquisitionandbasemanagement.Thesetermsdescribetwokeypartsofmarketingstrategy.Acquisitionreferstotheprocessofacquiringnewcustomers,throughadvertisings,promotions,andproductplacement.Basemanagementreferstotheprocessofmaintainingrelationshipswithexistingcustomers,aswellasidentifyingotherproductstheyneedthroughinteractingwiththosecustomers.
OneofthechaptersIassignedfortodaywastheintroductiontoadvertising.Asyouwouldhaveread,advertisingisacrucialpartofmarketing.Advertisingplaysamajorpartintheacquisitionprocess,anditisprobablythepartofmarketingthatyou,asyoungconsumers,havemostcomeintocontactwith.
Advertisingandpromotionarepartoftoday’sbasicmarketingstrategy,buttheyflyinthefaceofclassicaleconomictheory,whichoperatesontheideathatsupplyanddemandarenotdependentononeanother.Ifthesupplierofagoodpromotesthatgood,theyareinessencetellingtheconsumer,ordemandsideoftheequation,whatitisthattheywanttoconsume.Supplyistryingtoinfluencedemand.Somecriticsarguethatthispervertstheidealfreemarket.
