Theauthorofsomefortynovels,anumberofplays,volumesofverse,historical,criticalandautobiographicalworks,aneditorandtranslator,JackLindsayisclearlyanextraordinarilyprolificwriter--afactwhichcaneasilyobscurehisveryrealdistinctioninsomeoftheareasintowhichhehasventured.Hisco-editorshipofVisioninSydneyintheearly1920's,forexample,isstillfelttohaveintroducedasignificantperiodinAustralianculture,whilehisstudyofKickenswrittenin1950ishighlyregarded.Butofallhisworkitisprobablythenoveltowhichhehasmadehismostsignificantcontribution.
Since1936when,tousehisownwordsinFanfrolicoandafter,he"reachedbedrock,"LindsayhasmaintainedaconsistentMarxistviewpoint--anditisthisviewpointwhichifnothingelsehasguaranteedhisnovelsaminorbutcertainlynotnegligiblePlaceinmodernBritishliterature.Feelingthat"thehistoricalnovelisaformthathasalimitlessfutureasafightingweaponandasaculturalinstrument"(NewMasses,January1937),LindsayfirstattemptedtoformulatehisMarxistconvictionsinfictionmainlysetinthepast:
particularlyinhistrilogyinEnglishnovels--1949(dealingwiththeDiggerandLevellermovements),LostBirthright(theWilkesiteagitations),andMenofForty-Eight(writtenin1939,theChartistandrevolutionaryuprisingsinEurope).Basicallytheseworkssetout,withmostsuccessinthefirstvolume,tovivifythehistoricaltraditionsbehindEnglishSocialismandattemptedtodemonstratethatitstood,inLindsay'swords,forthe"truecompletionofthenationaldestiny."
Althoughthewaryearssawthevirtualdisintegrationoftheleft-wingwritingmovementofthe1930's,Lindsayhimselfcarriedon:
delvingintocontemporaryaffairsinWeShallReturnandBeyondTerror,novelsinwhichtheepithetsformerlyreservedfortheevilcapitalistsorFraneo'ssoldiershavebeentransferredrathercrudelytotheGermantroops.AfterthewarLindsaycontinuedtowritemainlyaboutthepresent--tryingwithvaryingdegreesofsuccesstocometoterms,withtheunradicalpoliticalrealitiesofpost-warEngland.Intheseriesofnovelsknowncollectivelyas"TheBritishWay,"andbeginningwithBetrayedSpringin1953,itseemedatfirstasifhissolutionwassimplytoresorttomoreandmoreobviousauthorialmanipulationandheavy-handeddidacticismFortunately,however,fromRevoltoftheSons,thisproceedwasreversed,asLindsaybegantoshowanincreasingtendencytoignorepartysolutions,tofailindeedtogiveanythingbutthemostelementarypoliticalconsciousnesstohischaracters,sothatinhislatest(andwhatappearstobehislast)contemporarynovel,ChoiceofTimes,hishero,Colin,endsonanoteofdesperation:

Positivesurprisesfromgovernmentreportsonretailsales,industrialproduction,andhousinginthepastfewmonthsareleadingeconomiststorevisetheirrealgrossdomesticproductforecastsupward,supportingthenotionthattherecessionendedinDecemberorJanuary.
Bareinmind:
Thisrecoverywon'thavethevitalitynormallyassociatedwithanupturn.Economistsnow-expectrealGDPgrowthofabout1.5%inthefirstquarter.That'sbetterthanthe0.4%theconsensusprojectedinDecember,butmuchoftheadditionalgrowthwillcomefromaslowerpaceofinventorydrawdowns,notfromsurgingdemand.
Moreover,theeconomywon'tgrowfastenoughtohelpthelabormarketsmuch.TheonlygoodnewsthereisthatjoblessclaimshavefallenbackfromtheirspikeafterSeptember11andthattheircurrentlevelsuggeststhepaceoflayoffsiseasing.
TherecoveralsodoesnotmeantheFederalReservewillraiseinterestratessoon.TheJanuarypriceindexesshowthatinflationremainstame.Consequently,theFedcantakeitstimeshiftingmonetarypolicyfromextremeaccommodationtorelativeneutrality.
PerhapsthebestnewsfromthelatesteconomicreportswastheJanuarydataonindustrialproduction.Totaloutputfellonly0.1%,itsbestshowingsinceJuly.Factoryoutputwasflat,alsothebestperformanceinsixmonths.Thosenumbersmaynotsoundencouraging,butmanufacturershavebeeninrecessionsincelate2000.Thedatasuggestthatthefactorysectorisfindingabottomfromwhichtostartitsrecovery.
Productionofconsumergoods,forinstance,isalmostbackuptowhereitwasayearago.That’sbecauseconsumerdemandformotorvehiclesandothergoodsandthehousingindustryremainedhealthyduringtherecession,andtheyarestillgrowinginearly2002.
Besides,boththemonthlyhomebuildingstartsnumberandthehousingmarketindexforthepasttwomonthsarerunningabovetheiraveragesforallof2001,suggestingthathomebuildingisofftoagoodstartandprobablywon’tbeabigdragonGDPgrowththisyear.
Equallyimportanttotheoutlookishowthesolidhousingmarketwillhelpdemandforhome-relatedgoodsandservices.Traditionally,consumersbuythebulkoftheirfurniture,electronics,andtextileswithinayearofpurchasingtheirhomes.Thus,spendingonsuchitemswilldowellthisyear,evenascarsalesslipnowthatincentivesarelessattractive.Lookfortheoutputofconsumergoodstotopyear-agolevelsincomingmonths.
