ThingschangedforBeethovenin1798whenhishearingwasbecomingimpaired.HecomposedtheFirstSymphonyandSeptetOp20andperformedthemonApril2,1800,anditwongreatsuccess.However,hishearingcontinuedtoworsen,andhebegantoseparatehimselffromhisfamilyandfriendsinordertoavoidconversation.
AftertheperformanceofhisNinthSymphony,heturnedaroundtoseethewarmapplauseoftheaudienceandbrokedownintearswhenherealizedthathecouldn’thearthem.Fightingagainstdepression(抑郁)andadisorder,Beethovencontinuedtoproducemusicbyusingspecialequipmentthathelpedhimtohearhissymphonies.Thisequipmentwasathinstickconnectedwiththesoundboardofhispiano.Bitingit,hewasabletofeelvibrations(震动)ofsound.Themusicthathecreatedduringthisperiodwasfilledwithheroismandstruggle,andwentontobecomehismostfamouscompositions.
