(颐和园的兴建历史)Thesummerpalacewasfirststartedin1750duringthegoldenageoftheQingdynasty.Atthattime,Chinahadvastterritoriesandgreatpower.ThereigningemperorofthetimewasEmperorQianlong,the4themperoroftheTsingDynasty.RelyingonhisdeepunderstandingofChineseancientgardens,hissupremepowerandthebrimmingnationalcoffers,hedecidedtobuildagardeninwestBeijing“tofacilitateirrigationandtocelebratehismother’sbirthday”.HepickedupanideallocationatthefootoftheYanshanMontainstobuildthismostexquisitegarden.HeborrowedalltheexcellentgardeningtechniquesfromclassicalChinesegardens,inheritedalltheachievementsofalltheimperialgardens,andgatheredalargenumberofthecraftsmenandartists.Theprojectlastedatotalof15yearsandthegardenwasfirstnamedQingyiYuan,thegardenofClearRipples.ItrepresentedtheultimateachievementofChinesegardenculture.However,unfortunately,in1860,theGardenofClearRipples,togetherwithYuanmingYuan,theoldSummerPalace,wasravagedandburntdownbytheAnglo-FrenchAlliedForce.In1888,EmpressDowagerCiXiorderedtorebuildthisgardenontheremainsoftheClearRippleGardenandrenameditYiheYuan,betterknownastheSummerPalacetoday.TheSummerPalaceisthelargestandbestreservedimperialgardenintheworldtodayandcarriesrichculturalconnotation.Itisknownasthemuseumofimperialgardens.In1998,theSummerPalacewasinscribedintheWorldCultureHeritageListbyUNESCOandwasrecognizedtorepresentorientalgardenculture.

(仁寿殿)ThisspacioushalliscalledRenshouDian,theHallofBenevolenceandLongevity.Itusedtobethegovernmentcenterinthesummerpalace.Itwasfirstbuiltin1750andnamedQinzhengDian,HallofDiligentGovernment.EmperorQianlongsetarulethatalltheaudiencehallshouldbenamedQinzhengDianinordertoremindtheemperorstobediligentintheirwork.EmperorJiaqing,sonofemperorQianlong,oncesaidinoneofhisarticles“OnDiligentGovernment”:
“whentheemperorisdiligent,thecountrywillbewellruled,whereasiftheemperorisslack,thecountrywillbeindanger.”Sodiligentgovernmentplaysanimportantroleinthedestinyofthewholecountry.WhentheSummerPalacewasrebuiltafterthebigfire,empressdowagerCixirenameditRenshouDian,HallofBenevolenceandLongevity.Thisnamecamefromthesentence“RenZheshou”inTheAnalectsofConfuciustosignifythatthebenevolentrulerswillenjoyalonglife.Cixi’sgreathopewaseverlastinglife;therefore,manydecorationswereaddedinthishalltosymbolizelongevity.Nowlet’slookupatthegraytilesontheroof.Attheendofeachtile,thereisaChinesecharacter“Shou”whichmeanslongevity.Thereare412oftheminall.Pleaselookthisway.UnderthebigplaquehangingontopofthethroneisamirrorscreeninscribedwiththeChinesecharacter“Shou”.Thereare266suchcharactersalltogether.Look,thereisahugecalligraphyscrollhangingfromthewallfacingthegate.ThereareabigChinesecharacterShouwrittenonit,surroundedby100bats,whichsignifygreatfortuneandhappiness.ItissaidthebigcharacteriswrittenbyEmpressDowagerCixi.SowenowhavelearntthatCixiusedhundredsofShoucharactersinoronthisbuildingtoexpressherdesireforlongevity.
