AlcatrazIslandisintheharborofSanFrancisco,California.Itisbestknownforbeingafederalprison,whichwasalsocalled“TheRock.”ItwasoncethemostfamousprisoninAmerica.
Alcatrazwasamilitaryprisonfromthelateeighteenfiftiesuntilthenineteenthirties.Thenitbecameafederalprisonforthecountry’sworstcriminals.Theseincludedmurderers,bankrobbersandkidnappers.OneofthemainreasonsfederalofficialschoseAlcatrazIslandtodetaintheseprisonerswasbecausetheythoughtitwouldbeimpossibleforprisonerstoescape.
Cold,deepanddangerouswaterssurroundtheisland.Also,thedistancebetweentheislandandSanFranciscoistoofarformosthumanstoswim.Noprisonerwaseverofficiallyreportedtohavesuccessfullyescaped.
