Myfirstdayatseniorhigh
AfterIhadpictureditoverandoveragaininmymind,thebigdayfinallyarrived:
myfirstdayatseniorhigh!
Iwokeupearlyandrushedoutofthedoorinmyeagernesstogettoknowmynewschool.
ThecampuswasstillquietwhenIarrived,soIdecidedtoexploreabit.IwaslookingatthephotosonthenoticeboardwhenIheardavoicebehindme.“Newhere?
”Turingaround,Isawawhite-hairedman.“Yes,”Ireplied.“I’mwonderingwhatlifeisgoingtobelikehere.”“Don’tworry,”hegavemeasmile.“You’llsoonfindout.”
”
Howtruethesewordswere!
WhenmyEnglishteachersteppedintotheclassroom,IwassurprisedtoseethesamemanIhadmetearlier.
“Goodmorning,everyone.Beforewestart,pleasecometothefrontonebyoneandintroduceyourselftotheclass.I’llgofirst…”
“What?

Somethingaboutmyinsectcollection,perhaps.”Iwasorganizingmywordsinmyheadwhenthegirlnexttomegavemeanudge.“It’syourturn!
”
!
”
Withbutterfliesinmystomach,Ibreatheddeeply.“Hi,I’mMengHao.”Everyonestartedlaughing.Ilookedattheminpanic.“Nicetoknowwesharethesamename,”saidmynewteacher.Ihadbeentoonervoustopayattentionwhenheintroducedhimself!
AlthoughIwasembarrassed,hiswordsmademealotmorerelaxed!
Whenwehadallintroducedourselves,MrMengsaid,“Welldone,everyone!
Iknowthisisn’teasyformanyofyou.Butthisisjustthekindofthingyouaregoingtofaceatseniorhigh.Challengeslikethismightsometimesputyouunderpressure.Butitalldependsonwhatyoudo.Keepcalmandbeprepared.Thatway,you’llmakethemostofyourtimeatseniorhigh.”
”
Peoplesay,“Wellbegun,halfdone.”Iguessthiswasagoodbeginningtomynewschoollife.

HelloandwelcometoSchoolTalk!

Lisa:
Hi,everybody.I’mverygladtobeback.Ifeelasifhighschoolwasonlyyesterday!
Interviewer:

Lisa:

Justkeepanopenmindandtakepartinasmuchaspossible.
Interviewer:
That’ssoundadviceforsure.Buthowdidyoudealwithnewchallenges,likestartinganewcourse?
Lisa:

Interviewer:
So,holdyourheadup,then.Butlifeisnotalwayseasy.Youmusthavehadsomemomentswhenyouweredisappointed.Ifso,howdidyoudealwiththem?
Lisa:

Interviewer:
Yes,Itotallyagree.Isthereanythingelseinparticularthatyou’dliketosharewithus?

Interviewer:
Neat!
Well,thanksagainforcomingtospeaktous,Lisa.Andgoodluckwithcollege!

HaveyoueveraskedyourselfwhypeopleoftenhavetroublelearningEnglish?
Ihadn’t,untilonedaymyfive-year-oldsonaskedmewhethertherewashaminahamburger.Thereisn’t.Thismademerealizethatthere’snoeggineggplanteither.Neitheristherepinenorappleinpineapple.ThisgotmethinkinghowEnglishcanbeacrazylanguagetolearn.
我从未想过这个问题,直到有一天,我五岁的儿子问我hamburger(汉堡包)里是否有ham(火腿)。
这让我意识到eggplant(茄子)里也没有egg(鸡蛋)。
pineapple(菠萝)里既没有pine(松树),也没有apple(苹果)。
Forexample,inourfreetimewecansculptasculptureandpaintapainting,butwetakeaphoto.Andwhenwearetravelingwesaythatweareinthecarorthetaxi,butonthetrainorbus!
Whilewe’redoingallthistraveling,wecangetseasickatsea,airsickintheairandcarsickinacar,butwedon’tgethomesickwhenwegetbackhome.Andspeakingofhome,whyaren’thomeworkandhouseworkthesamething?
说到家,为什么homework(家庭作业)和housework(家务)(这两个英语单词看起来很像意思却)不是一回事呢?
If“hard”istheoppositeof“soft”,whyare“hardly”and“softly”notanopposingpair?
Ifharmlessactionsaretheoppositeofharmfulactions,whyareshamelessandshamefulbehaviorsthesame?
如果说hard(硬)是soft(软)的反义词,为什么hardly(几乎不)和softly(柔和地,轻柔地)却不是一对反义词呢?
Whenwelookoutofthewindowandseerainorsnow,wecansay“it’sraining”or“it’ssnowing”.Butwhenweseesunshine,wecan’tsay“it’ssunshining”.
Eventhesmallestofwordscanbeconfusing.Whenyouseethecapitalized“WHO”inamedicalreport,doyoureaditasthe“who”in“Who’sthat?
”Whatabout“IT”and“US”?
Who’sthat?
中的who吗?
Youalsohavetowonderattheuniquemadnessofalanguageinwhichahousecanburnupasitburnsdown,inwhichyoufillinaformbyfillingitout,andinwhichanalarmisonlyheardonceitgoesoff!
在英语里,房子烧成灰烬时,可以说burnup(字面意思是“烧上去”),也可以说burndown(字面意思是“烧下去”);填表时,你可以说fillinaform(字面意思是“填入表里”),也可以说filloutaform(字面意思是“填到表外”);而且只有闹钟走了(gooff字面意思是“离开”)以后你才能听到铃声!
Englishwasinventedbypeople,notcomputers,anditreflectsthecreativityofthehumanrace.Thatiswhywhenthestarsareout,theyarevisible,butwhenthelightsareout,theyareinvisible.AndthatiswhywhenIwindupmywatch,itstarts,butwhenIwindupthispassage,itends.
这就是为什么starsareout(星星出现了)时,我们能看到星星,而当lightsareout(灯光熄灭)时,我们却看不到灯光。
这也是当我windupmywatch(给手表上紧发条)以后表针开始走,而我windupthispassage(将本文收尾)后这篇文章结束的原因。
