在阅读此小说的时候,让我不禁去想如果这两姐妹并非如书中所说的通过理智与情感的完美结合来寻找幸福,而是从理智与情感中只选择一者,她们将会有怎样不同的结局?
在爱情的世界里,理智与情感,究竟哪一个更贴合实际?
本文将通过分别对这两姐妹:
埃丽诺与玛丽安,进行分析并设想如果她们只追求情感而并非理智,将会得到怎样的结局。

JaneAustenisaBritishwriterwhowroteherfirstnovelSenseandSensibilityin1811.ThestoryisaboutElinorandMarianne,twodaughtersofMr.Dashwood,howtheyencounterthesenseandsensibilityoflifeandloveafteralltheeventsthey’vebeenthroughinthenovel.ImpetuousMarianneDashwoodtumblesintoafairytaleromancethatgoessour,andherpracticaloldersisterElinorcopeswiththefamily'sfinancialproblemswhilehidingherownfrustratedromantichopes.Thesetwosistersbothfindtheirhappinessandhaveahappyending.
Butduringmyreading,itmakesmewonderaboutsenseandsensibility,theyovercameeveryheartbreakandfoundlove,butwhatiftheydidn’thaveenoughsenseandsensibilityintheirheartswhentheyencounteredalltheunexpectedevents?
Wouldtheyfindthetrueloveeventually?

JaneAusten,cameintotheworldonDecember,16th1775.BorntoReverendGeorgeAustenoftheSteventonrectoryandCassandraAustenoftheLeighfamily(Spence,2003:
5).EdmundWilsononcesaid:
“Inahundredyears,Britainhashadseveralinterestingrevolution,therenovationofliterarytastealmostallthewritersofreputation,exceptionofShakespeareandJaneAustenenduring.”JaneAustenwastobeGeorgeAusten’sseventhchildandonlytheseconddaughter.It’sJane’sgreatfortunetobebornintoasupremelyhappyandresourcefulfamily.GeorgeAustentookpupils,thesonsofthelocalgentry,whowereeducatedwithhisownchildrenandwereboardedinthehouse.CassandraAusten,agreaterreaderandhadagiftforwritingverse,wasathriftyandsensiblemother,shekeptafewcowsatSteventonandwouldcertainlyhavehadawell-stockedpoultry-yard.Havinggoodparents,theAustenchildrenlivedinanenvironmentofopenlearning,creativityanddialogue

MaybethetemperofDashwoodsistersfromSenseandSensibilitywasbasedonthetemperofAustensisters.
DespiteJane’syouthfulpopularityandtheromanticnovelsshewrote,allherrelationshipswithmencametonothing.Herobstinateheartforbadehertomarryexceptforlove(Myer,1997:
103).Beingsingleallherlife,withCassandra’snever-failingsupportandastrongfamilyloyalty,JaneAustenwrotesixnovelswhichhighlightthedependenceofwomenonmarriagetosecuresocialstandingandeconomicsecurity.From1811until1816,withthereleaseofSenseandSensibility(1811),PrideandPrejudice(1813),MansfieldPark(1814)andEmma(1816),sheachievedsuccessasapublishedwriter.Shewrotetwoadditionalnovels,NorthangerAbbeyandPersuasion,bothpublishedposthumouslyin1818,andbeganathird,whichwaseventuallytitledSandition,butdiedbeforecompletingit.ThoughAusten’snovelsarepopulartoday,butitmaybedifficultforreadersofthepresentdaytobelievehowcoldlyherworkswereatfirstreceived,andhowfewreadershadanyappreciationoftheirpeculiarmerit(Leigh,1989:
361).
In1816Janebegantofeelincreasinglyunwell.BeingDeclinedHealthofJaneAusten,Leigh(1989:
295)wrotethatwemaywellbelieveshewouldgladlyhavelivedlonger;butshewasenabledwithoutdismayorcomplainttopreparefordeath…InquietnessandpeaceshebreathedherlastonthemorningofJuly18,1817.Everyoneinherfamilywasindeepgrief,CassandrawrotetoFannyKnight:
Ihavelostatreasure,suchaSister,suchafriendasnevercanhavebeensurpassed,--shewasthesunofmylife,thegliderofeverypleasure,thesootherofeverysorrow.Ihadnotathoughtconcealedfromher,&,itisasifIhadlostapartofmyself(Cassandra,1817:
1).
ThoughJaneAustenleftusforever,butweareleftwithwhataretrulytimelesspieceofart,whichleftallreaderswiththefancifulnotionofloverevealed,loveenduring.
2.2AbriefintroductiontoSenseandSensibility
SenseandSensibilitywasthefirstofJaneAusten’snovelspublished.AfterfinishingFirstimpression,JanereturnedtoElinorandMariannearound1797,reviseditheavily,writtenintheformofletters,andeliminatedtheepistolaryformatinfavorofthird-personnarration.ButshefoundthistoorestrictingandlatertransformedthetextintoSenseandSensibility,whichwaspublishedin1811.
ThefirsteditionofSenseandSensibilityhavesoldoutquicklyenoughintwentymonthsandwithcoveredtheexpenseofprinting,Austenearnedaquitereasonableprofit.Apparently,it’sdoubtthatthenovelhasafavorablereceptionthattheRoyalFamilywerereadingit.PrincessCharlotte,nieceoftheDukeofYork,wroteon22January1812:
‘SenseandSensibilityIhavejustfinishedreading;itcertainlyisinteresting,&,howeverremainverylike.Imustsayitinterestedmemuch.’TheappreciativecommentsdiddelightandencourageJanegreatlytocontinuewritinganother5novels.
InSenseandSensibility,Austencomparesthediscretion,politeliesandcarefullypreservedprivacyofonesisterwiththetransparency,truth-tellingandfreelyexpressedemotionoftheother.Austenisconsideringhowfarsocietycantolerateopenness,andwhatitseffectontheindividualmaybe.Thequestionwaskeenlydebatedinthe1790saspartofawiderpoliticaldiscussion,withradicalwriterslikeWilliamGodwinandRobertBagefavoringthecompleteopennesspracticedbyMarianne,conservativesinsistingthatthepreservationofthesocialfabricrequiresanelementofsecrecyandhypocrisy.Thesewereseriousquestions,andoneofthethingsthatgivesthebookitsintenseinterestisthatAustenstartsasthoughsheisfavoringonesetofanswers,andgrowslesscertainasthebookprogress(Tomalin,1997:
155).
SenseandSensibilityisastoryabouttwoheroines:
ElinorDashwoodandMarianneDashwood,withElinorrepresenting‘sense’andMariannerepresenting‘sensibility’.AlongwiththeirmotherandyoungersisterMargaret,thesetwosisterswereleftimpoverishedafterthedeathoftheirfather,andthefamilyisforcedtomovetoacountrycottage,offeredbyagenerousrelativeSirJohnMiddleton.ElinorformedanattachmenttothegentleandcourteousmanEdwardFerrars,unawarethathehasalreadyengagedwithLucySteele,thenieceofhistutor.MariannemetJohnWilloughbyafterherfamilymovedtoBarton.WilloughbyisadashingfigurewhocharmsMarianneandledherintodisciplinedbehaviorthatamongtheirmutualacquaintancesisgenerallyunderstoodWilloughbyisengagedtoMarianne,AfterElinorandMarianneexperiencedbothromanceandheartbreakthecontrastbetweenthesister’scharactersareeventuallyresolvedastheyeachfindloveandlastinghappiness.
3Thebattlebetweensenseandsensibility

Justlikelightanddark,YinandYang,thetwoopposingprinciplesinnature.Ihadreadsuchabookformanytimes,whichisnamedSenseandSensibilitywrittenbyJaneAusten(16December1775–18July1817).AnEnglishnovelistwhoseworksofromanticfiction,setamongthelandedgentry,earnedheraplaceasoneofthemostwidelyreadwritersinEnglishliterature,herrealismandbitingsocialcommentarycementingherhistoricalimportanceamongscholarsandcritics.Althoughthisisthefirstnovelshehadwritten,yetsoskillful.Everyplotofthestoryiscleverlyconceivedbythewriter.
