Millenniaago,Mt.Langshanwasaninlandlake.Overalongperiodoftime,themovementsunderEarth’scrustexposedthebottomofthelaketotheair,creatingalandformofredsandstone.Mt.LangshanisthelargestofChineselandformsofredsandstoneinshapeandsize.

Lookingup,youspotaperpendicularscalingladderontheprecipices,leadingto‘No.OneMountainCleft’.Theinscriptionsweregivenin1992byprofessorChenGuodaoinpersononhistourhere,awell-knowngeologistandanacademicianofChineseAcademyofScience.‘No.OneMountainCleft’is238.8mlongand100mto200mhighonaverage.0.8mwideatitswidestpointand0.5mwideatitsnarrowest.TheScenicAreaoftheOctagonalStockadedvillageliesintheborderlandbetweenHunanandGuangxiatthesouthernmostendofMt.langshan.Theareahastakenitsnamefromthefactthat8paeksonthetopofthemountainresemblinganoctagonallotusflowerarecloselyconnected.ThescenicareaoftheCamelPeakisatypicallandformofredsandstone.TheCamelPeak,187.8mhighand273mlong,loomsupstraightahead,toweringsurroundingpeaks,makesthelongest,biggestandheaviestcameltrudgingherefromdesert.
ThePepper-likePeakisanupside-downpositionstands180mhigh,about100mincircumferenceatthetopand40matthebase.ThebrightredpepperisasymbolforthecharacteristicenthusiasmofHunanpeople.FrenchSpidermanAlainRobertwasseenclimbingtherockbarehandedinSeptember,2002—aneventtobeattheGuinnessWorldRecordforrock-climbing.

TheYueyangTower,nowplacedontheOfficialListofNationalHeritagesranksasoneofthefirst4Atouristdestinations.TheYueyangTowerhasalonghistory.BuiltinthenineteenthyearofthereignofEmperorJiananofEasternHanDynastyor214AD,usedbyLuSuasthearmy-reviewingterrace,wasrenamedtheYueyangTowerinthesecondyearofthereignofEmperorQianyuanofthetangdynastyor759AD.OfthethreefamoustowerssouthoftheYangtzeRiver,itbillsitselfastheoldest.
Moreover,thetowerisuniqueinscenery.Itisimbuedwithfourgraces:
theriver,thelake,themountainandthecity.“ThebeautyofBaling(anoldnameforYueyang),isgivenanaddedgracebytheDongtingLake,withmountainsinthedistance,emptyingintotheYangtzeRiver.Dazzlinginthemorningsunandfadingintothegrayeveningmist,theDongtingisamagnificentlakeofmyriadscenes.’Inaddition,thetowerfavoredbyChinesepoets,sculptors,engraversandcalligraphersinChinesehistory,isnowanimportantplaceofculturalinterest.

TheYueyangTowerisalsoarareantiquityofChina.OfthethreefamoustowerssouthoftheYangtzeRiver,theYueyangToweristheonly-preservedtower.ThisNationalHeritageboastsofit’shistorical,artisticandscientificvalues.Thepresenttowerallmadeofwoodwasrebuiltin1983asithadbeen,itisheldtogetherbymortiseandtenonjoinerywithouttheuseofasinglenail.

‘theYueyangTower’,nowincludedin‘TheFamedHorizontalBoardsofChina’.Madeofwood,thethree-storeytowerisstructuredwiththreetiersofeaves,ahelmet-shapedroofandtilesglazedinyellow.Thehelmet-shapedroofisastrikingfeatureoftheYueyangTower.TheroofbearsastrikingresemblanceofamilitarygeneralofancientChina,majestic-looking.Havingalookatthearchesbelowtheroof.Thehoney-comblikearches,tierupontier,aregracedbythedesignsofdragonheads,phoenixheadsandclouds,sustainingtheweightoftheroofandaddingtoelegance,gravenessandharmonyofthebuilding.Thestructureofthetowershowsremarkableachievementsintermsofitsaesthetics,mechanicsarchitectureandtechnologicaldesign.
