Thedisasternotonlydevastatedlivesandlivelihoods,butalsodestroyed__44__andinfrastructure.InSichuanandneighbouringGansuandShanxiprovinces,anestimatedfivemillionbuildingscollapsed,21millionbuildingsweredamagedandover40millionpeoplewereaffectedbytheearthquake.
AccordingtotheChineseGovernment,reconstructioncouldtakeaslongasthreeyearsduringwhich__45__structuresmustberebuilt,livelihoodsandbasicservicesrestored,collapsedschoolsandhospitalsreconstructedandroadsrepaired.
TheUNAppealaddressestheneedsofthepoorandvulnerableamongtheaffectedpopulation,whowhilesurvivingthe8.0magnitudeearthquake,arenowinthe__46__ofrebuildingtheirlives.
TheAppealfocusesonninesectors(shelter;health,__47__andHIV/AIDS;waterandsanitation;protectionofvulnerablegroups;education;livelihoods;environment;ethnicminoritiesandcoordinationandcommunication)whichaddresstheneedsofthesurvivorswhohavereceivedbasicassistancebutwill__48__morecomprehensiveaidoverthenextsixmonthsasreconstructiongetsunderwayandbeforewintersetsin.
TheUNhasalreadyprovidedoverUS$17millioninassistance,ofwhichUS$8millioncamefromitsCentralEmergencyResponseFund(CERF)inhumanitarianrelief__49__aftertheearthquake.
