英语学习法研究:
一篇文章一百词汇
英语学习在于积累,同时最令人痛苦的地方也在于此,如何高效地积累英语知识,尤其是积累词汇就成为英语学习的核心问题。
有的人说拿一本词汇书狂记狂背就行,但这种方法容易产生遗忘问题;也有人说从阅读中学习并记忆词汇;但这种方法太浪费时间,对大家来说不太现实;也有的人说通过词根与词缀词汇最有效,但我认为这种方法只是词汇的补充,并不能把它作为记忆词汇的全部。
在我看来,这些方法都有行之有效的方法,但并不是高效的方法。
从我个人学习英语的经验来说,我最近总结并提出一个概念叫做:
“一篇文章一百词汇”。
即就是通过精读一篇好文章来比较好地掌握一百来个词汇。
也就是说通过研究一二十篇好的文章可以让我们的词汇量增加2000或者更多,所以我认为这是高效的方法之一。
这种方法可以综合用时少,词汇记忆效果好等优点,更重要是它让我们掌握了词汇不是死的,而是活的,在用的词汇,在文章活生生的在用的词汇,这样你不但掌握了词汇,而且掌握它的最常用的用法。
所以我最近一直在用这个方法来学习英语。
感觉就像一个得道高人一样爽啊!
呵呵。
当然,要使用这个方法的话就会有这样一个问题:
文章的来源是什么?
我的答案是英美国家的杂志,如:
TheEconomist(经济学家),BusinessWeek(商业周刊),WallStreetJournal(华尔街杂志);“TIME”,“Readers’Digest”,等等。
为什么选这些杂志作为文章来源呢?
答案只有一个,这才是英语学习与提高的王道,这样我们才能学会地道的英文,我们的英语水平才能得到质的飞越。
我有时看国内的一些文章感觉很好懂,其实并不是文章简单,而是因为这些文章都是中国人思维的产物,所以好懂了,因此,我提倡大学生有一定词汇量以后(比如5000-6000以上的)就应该开始读外国杂志。
用在现在这个互联网的时代,我想找一本这样的杂志并不难吧,所以来源就讲到这里,然后我举例来说明如何通过精读一篇好文章来比较好地掌握一百来个词汇。
其实,掌握词汇是文章能给我们带来的最为明显的好处,但它还有什么用,用处太多了:
我还可以总结出好的写作句型,好的惯出搭配等。
我从美国2005年5月的Readers’Digest(读者文摘)一期中选了一篇这样的文章,题目是“He’sGotaKnife!
”(他有一把刀!
)原文如下:

ThewomanwasJeanneHobbs,adining-staffsupervisoratGoodwinHouse,a37-year-oldmotherofthree,hadjusthungupthephonewithherhusband,Geoffrey.ShewasabouttoleaveworkandheadtoherpotteryclasswhileGeoffreyfedthekidsdinnerandhelpedwiththeirhomework.Butwhenshelookedupfromherdesk,shesawamaninthedoorwaywithaknife.
HobbsrecognizedhimasMustafaMohamed,amemberofthehousekeepingstaffwhocustomarilyhadacheeryhelloandasmile.Mohamedwasoneofthosepeoplewhoalwaysseemedwillingtohelpout.
Butanhourearlier,heeruptedinangerwhenHobbsaskedhimtotakecareofthetrash.Furious,hehadtoldhershecouldn’ttellhimwhattodo.Andnow,ashestoodinthedoorway,hewasn’tsmiling.
Therewasnoescape.Mohamedlungedather,wrestledhertothegroundandbeganstabbingherwhileshescreamed.
SpringerwasaformerMarine,whonowmanagedastaffof22ataWashington,D.C.,lawfirm.Hewasusedtohavinghisordersfollowed,andheshoutedforMohamedtostop.
Buttheassailantdidn’tevenlookup.Thewallsandcarpetwerespatteredwithblood.
SpringerrushedatMohamed,grabbinghisknifearmandallowingthewomantocrawlaway.Theattackerlookedtobeinthis30sandwasamuscular5feet,10inchesand230pounds.Lurchingtohisfeet,MohamedgrabbedSpringerinabearhugandcrushedthesmallerman’sfacetohischest.Springer’sglassesflewoff.
Yearsearlier,Springerhadlostalungtocancer,andnowtakesnearly50medicationsadaytocontrolallofhisailments---aheartcondition,highbloodpressure,Grohn’sdisease,andasthma.At5feet,8inchesand190pounds,hewasnomatchforMohamed,whowasnowontopofhim.
Springersawtheknifeflickbackandforthinchesfromhereyes.Theserratedbladeslicedopentheskinonhisscalp,forehead,andleftcheek.HetriedtograbMohamed’shand,buttheslashingcontinued.
Thentheassaultabruptlystopped.Anursingaidestoodinthedoorway.ShetalkedsoftlytoMohamed,attemptingtodistracthim.Whenhestoodupandmovedtowardher,shebackedawayandfled.Hefollowed.
NowSpringer,aloneandbleeding,struggledtohiskneesandreachedforhiscellphonetocall911.
Mohamedwasmakinghiswaydownthecorridor,walkingthroughopendoorsandslashingatpatientsastheylayintheirbedsorsatinwheelchairs.Springercouldhearscreams,buthewastooweaktomove.
Downthehall,JaneMargaretDowheardthecommotiontoo.Dow,59,aneditoratawireservice,wasreadinganewspaperatthebedsideofhersleepingmother.Shethoughtshe’dheardachild,orperhapsadog.Thensomeoneshouted,“He’skillingher!
”
Peeringoutthedoor,Dowsawmanbentoverabedinaroomdownthehall.Shecouldn’ttellwhathewasdoing,butwhenhecameoutoftheroom,hisgrayuniformwasredwithblood.Dowquicklyshuthermother’sdoor.Herheartracedasshecameupwithaplan.
Shehadsuddenlyrememberedthepepperspraythatshehadinherpurse.Alongtimecitydweller,Dowhadcarrieditaroundwithherforyear,justincase.Nowshegrabbedthecanisterandsteppedintothehallway.
TherewasMohamed,holdingtheknife.Advancingtowardhimwasamalenurse.“Oh,Mustafa,”hesaid,“whathaveyoudone?
”Hekepttalking,tryingtocalmMohamed.
Dowfellinbehindthenurse.Shehadneveractuallyusedthesprayonaperson---justonceonadogshewasafraidmightbiteher.WhenshewaswithinafewfeetofMohamed,shesteppedoutfrombehindthenurse,raisedthecansprayeddirectlyintohiseyes.
Mohamedtriedtogetaway,butDowkeptafterhim,spraying.Inafury,heturnedtowardherandlungedwiththeknife.Thebladehitherinthestomachandshefellagainstthewall.Miraculously,theknifehadbent.Herpinksweaterwasn’tevenripped.
WhenDowlookedup,themanhadsurrenderedtheknifetothenurseandwasleaningagainstthewall,mumbling.Minuteslater,policearrived.
MustafaMohamedwasarrestedandchargedwithtwocountsofmaliciouswounding.Heiscurrentlyundergoingpsychiatrictestingtodeterminewhetherhe’scompetenttostandtrial.
Inall,sixpeoplewereinjuredintheGoodwinHouseattacks.JohnSpringerrequired48stitchesinhisfaceandscalp.Fordaysafterward,hecouldn’tsleep.
