Abstract
Bodylanguageisvitaltothesuccessincommunication.Italwaysaccompaniesourverbalexpressionasithelpsusexpressourselvesandunderstandothers.Itshowsand/orcontributestotherelationshipbetweenpeople.It,however,sometimesmakestroubleforus.Bodylanguageiscomplicatedaswell,yetacquirable.
Statisticsshowsthatbodylanguagehasbeencomprehensivelystudiedsincethe1950s.Theresearchfindingshavebeenwidelyappliedinthefieldsofpolitics,diplomacy,culturalexchange,business,andevenamongcommonpeople.However,manyproblemscausedbybodylanguageshowthatitspopularizingworkisfarfrombeingsatisfactory.People’sunderstandinglevelofitisstilltoberaised.Theresearchandpopularizationofbodylanguageneedfurtherpromotingandenhancing.
Thispapertriestointroducebodylanguageinrelationtoitsemergence,meaning,nature,functionandimportance,highlightingthedifferencesamongculturesandtheproblemswithregardtobodylanguage,analyzingitbasedontheexistingresearchfindings,itsclassificationsandthewriter’sownknowledgeinthefieldforthepurposeofprovidingsomesolutionstotheproblems.Finallyitconcludesthatbodylanguageplaysasignificant,orevencrucial,roleincommunicationwithinacultureaswellasbetweencultures,anditisverymeaningfulandhelpfultolearnaboutitandmanagetoapplyitcorrectlyand/oradvantageouslyinactualcontexts.
Thepaperisalsoexpectedtocontribute,moreorless,totheenhancementofpeople’sawarenessandunderstandingofbodylanguageandtoitspopularizationandskillsinitsapplicationinsociety,withanaimtohelppeoplesucceedintheiractualcommunications.

1.Introduction
Bodylanguageisimportantaswellascomplicated,particularlyininterculturalassociations.Itnearlyalwaysaccompaniesourverbalexpression.Sometimesitconveysmoreandhelpsorspoilsourintendingexpression.Ininternationalcontacts,thedifferencesofbodylanguageindifferentculturesoftencauseproblems.Bodylanguageisanimportantformofcommunicationthatwecannotavoidorignoreanyway.
Fromthe1950s,researchersstartedtoconductacomprehensivestudyofbodylanguageandhaveattainedbrilliantachievementssofar.In2006,TheDefinitiveBookofBodyLanguagebyAllanPease& BarbaraPeasewaspublishedbytheBantamDellPubGroup,whichomni-directionallyintroducesbodylanguageandattentivelyexplainsitspracticalapplications.“AlbertMehrabian,apioneerresearcherofbodylanguageinthe1950s,foundthatthetotalimpactofamessageisabout7%verbal(wordsonly)and38%vocaland55%non-verbal”[Pease2004:
9].In2008,avideoprogramcalledSecretsofBodyLanguagewaspublishedbytheAmericanHistoryChannel,whichvividlydisplayedandthoroughlyanalyzedbodylanguage,inwhichwereusedsomevideosofAmericanpresidentssuchasthoseofBush,Clinton,etc.DoctorLillianGlass,abodylanguageexpertandprofessoroftheUniversityofSouthernCalifornia,affirmsthatexactmessagescanbeacquiredbyseeingthroughthecodesoffacialexpression,speech,voiceandbodylanguage.Manyotherexpertsandscholarshavemadegreatachievementsinthefield,aswell.
Intheworldtoday,bodylanguage,asaformofnonverbalcommunicationandakindofsocialknowledge,isincreasinglystressedbymoreandmorepeople.Itiswidelyappliedinallfieldsoflifeandculture,especiallyinformalsituations.However,problemsariseinbodylanguageapplications,particularlythosebetweencultures.Somepeoplefindthemselvesintroublesjustbecauseoftheirmisuseormisunderstandingofbodylanguage.Thismainlycomesfromthecomplexityofbodylanguageitselfandpeople’slowlevelofunderstandingit.
Bodylanguageiscomplicated.Firstly,thereexistdifferencesamongthebodylanguagesindifferentcultures.Secondly,bodylanguageisoftenappliedincombinationsinsteadofasingleonetoexpressideasorfeelings.Thirdly,somebodylanguagesaresoslightandvaguethattheyarefleetingandnoteasytocatch.Fourthly,bodyactionsareoftenconstrainedbytheobjectiveconditions.Itistruethatsomebodylanguagesareeasytoapplyandunderstand,andsomeareevenuniversalovertheworld,butwecannotalwaysjudgeabodyactioninisolation,orwewillmakemistakesortroubles.Infact,evenwithinthesameculture,somebodylanguagesarenoteasytointerpret,letalonethosefromdifferentcultures.Tocorrectlyemployandunderstandbodylanguage,weneedtogainenoughrelevantknowledge,orevengetsomespecialtraining.
Somepeoplesimplybelievethatbodylanguageisuniversalandcanbeusedbasedonone’sownhabit.Thisbeliefmayarisefromlackofknowledgeofworldcultures.Infact,thepopularizationworkofbodylanguageisnotsatisfactory.Admittedly,somebodylanguagesareuniversal;evenso,wecannottakethingsforgranted.Thesimilaritiesanddifferencesofbodylanguageindifferentculturesdeserveourcarefullearningfortheobviousreasonthatpeoplefromdifferentculturesmayinterpretthesamebodylanguagedifferentlyandthatdifferentbodymovementsmaybeusedtoconveythesameidea,feelingoremotion.

3].Sincethen,researchershavehadlotsofvaluablefindingsintheirsystematicresearchintoitandgivenmanyadefinitiontoit.Ingeneral,theycallitaformofnonverbalandusuallyunintendedcommunicationandwidelyacceptthatitreferstoanykindofbodymovements,expressingideas,feelings,emotionsandattitudes.“Everythingisbodylanguage–toneofvoice,clearingourthroats,rubbingoureyes,crossingourarms,tappingourtoes,touchingournose–everythingexceptthewordswesay”[Steele1999:
