Somebelievethatgoingtoclassesshouldbeoptional.Studentsarematureenoughtomake
theirowndecisions.Besides,someteachers’lecturesaresoboringthatstudentswouldratherskip
classestostudybythemselvesorlearnwhattheyareinterestedin.Finally,attendancedoesn’t
guaranteeparticipationandmayturnouttobeawasteoftime.However,othersholdthatclass
attendanceshouldbemadecompulsory.Ontheonehand,itshowsourrespectfortheteachers.On
theotherhand,whileattendingclasses,studentswillbemadetotaketheirstudiesseriouslyand
pursueeveryopportunitytolearn.Moreover,undersomecircumstances,lackofattendancecould
meanthedifferencebetweenpassingorfailingtheexam.
AsfarasI’mconcerned,highereducationlaysstressonself-study,whichmeansthatstudents
havetherighttochoosetheirwayofacquiringknowledge.However,atthesametime,the
attendancecouldbeseenasfeedbackfromstudents,whichwillhelpteachersimprovetheir
teachingmethods.ThereforeIthinkweshouldleavethedecisionofwhetherornottoattendclassestostudents.
