TimespentinfrontofTVsandcomputersandvideogameshascomeunderfireinstudiesinrecentyearsforcontributingtoaspreadofobesityintheUSandaroundtheworld.Buttypicallytheresultingpublic-healthmessageurgeschildrenandadultstoputdowntheXboxcontrollerandremoteandgetonatreadmill(跑步机)orasoccerfield.
TheAustralianstudyoffersadifferentview.“It’snotthesweatytypeofexercisewe’relosing,”saysDavidDunstan,aresearcheratBakerIDIHeartandDiabetesInstitute,Melbourne,wholedthestudy.“It’stheincidentalmovingaround,standingupandusingmuscles.Thatdoesn’thappenwhenweareplunkedonacouchinfrontofatelevision.”
Indeed,participantsinthestudyreportedgettingbetween30and45minutesofexerciseaday,onaverage.
Theresultsaresupportedbyanewfieldofresearchthatshowshowlongperiodsofinactivitycanaffectthebody’sprocessingoffatsandothersubstancesthatcontributetoheartrisk.Andtheysuggestthatpeoplecanhelpdecreasesuchrisksimplybyavoidingextendedperiodsofsitting.”
