Intheyesr1878itookmydegreeofdoctorofmedicineoftheuniversityofLondon,andproceededtogothroughthecourseprescribedforsurgeonsintheArmy.Havingcompletedmystudiesthere,IwasdulyattachedtotheFifthNorthumberlandfusiliersasassistantsurgeon.TheregimentwasstationedinIndiaatthetime,andbeforeIcouldjoinit,thesecondAfghanwarhadbrokenout.OnlandingatBombay,Ileamedthatmycorpshadadvancedthroughthepasses,andwasalreadydeepintheenemy’scountry.Ifollowed,however,withmanyotherofficerswhowereinthesamesituationasmyself,andsucceededinreachingCandaharinsafety,whereIfoundmyregiment,andatonceentereduponnewduties.
Thecampaignbroughthonoursandpromotiontomany,butformeithadnothingbutmisfortuneanddisaster.IwasremovedfrommybrigadeandattachedtotheBerkshires,withwhomIservedatthefatalbattleofMaiwand.ThereIwasstruckontheshoulderbyaJezailbullet,whichshatteredtheboneandgrazedthesubclavianartery.IshouldhavefallenintothehandsofthemurderousGhazishaditnotbeenforthedevotionandcourageshownbyMurray,myorderly,whothrewmeacrossapackhorse,andsucceededinthebringingmesafelytotheBritishlines.
WomwithpainandweakfromtheprolongedhardshipswhichIhadundergone,Iwasremoved,withagreattrainodwoundedsufferers,tothebasehospitalatPeshawar.HereIrallied,andhadalreadyimprovedsofarastobeabletowalkaboutthewards,andeventobaskalittleupontheveranda,whenIwasstruckdownbyentericfever,thatcurseofourIndianpossessions.Formonthsmylifewasdespairedof,andwhenatlastIcametomyselfandbecameconvalescent,IwassoweakandemaciatedthatamedicalborddeterminedthatnotadayshouldbelostinsendingmebacktoEngland.Iwasdespatched,accordingly,inthetroopshipOrontes,andlandedamonthlateronPortsmouthjetty,withmyhealthirretrievablyruined,butwithpermissionfromapaternalgovernmenttospendthenextninemonthsinattemptingtoimproveit.
IhadneitherkithnorkininEngland,andwasthereforeasfreeasair-orasfreeasanincomeofelevenshillingsandsixpenceadaywillpermitamantobe.UndersuchcircumstancesInaturallygravitatedtoLondon,thatgreatcesspoolintowhichalltheloungersandidlersoftheEmpireareirresistiblydrained.ThereIstayedforsometimeataprivatehotelintheStrand,leadingacomfortless,meaninglessexistence,andspendingsuchmoneyasIhad,considerablymorefreelythanIought.Soalarmingdidthestateofmyfinancesbecome,thatIsoonrealizesthatImusteitherleavethemetropolisandrusticatesomewhereinthecountry,orthatImustmakeacompletealterationinmystyleofleavethehotel,andtakeupmyquartersinsomelesspretentiousandlessexpensivedomicile.
